Sober living homes, also known as sober living facilities and sober living homes, are facilities which offer structured, safe, independent living conditions for individuals leaving drug rehabilitation programs, and providing an opportunity for drug abusers to regain control of their lives. Generally, SLH serve as an interim period between these programs and normal society. The program is not a rehabilitation program, but provides a controlled environment, a set of rules and guidelines, and group activities for the residents to participate in. As such, sobered living homes are a great place for addicts to go to get away from their addiction for short periods of time.

Sober Living Homes generally are not residential treatment centers. Instead, they are residential treatment and rehabilitation centers. Sober Living homes generally have residential units which are dedicated to rehabilitating people from addictions. They offer treatment for substance abuse, sexual and/or mental disorders, and other mental illnesses. All of these programs are administered by experts who have expertise in dealing with drug addicts. The staff at a sober living home is highly trained in these areas of addiction and will take on the addict as one of their own. This helps them gain the confidence needed in order to effectively administer the various programs and also gives the addict some support in the process of recovery.

Sober Living homes offer both residential and outpatient programs. The residential programs include individual counseling and group therapies. The outpatient programs are designed to help those individuals who want to stay at the sober living home for a longer period of time. These programs are administered by licensed professionals and the residents are supervised closely. In order to qualify for a residential program, an addict must be at least 18 years of age, have been drug free for at least a year, have an interest in learning about sobriety, and be committed to doing so. The residential programs are designed to provide individual and group therapy, detoxification, and individual and group counseling. This is done in a clinical setting that combines the most effective therapies and medical treatments in a single facility.
