Sober Living Homes, also known as sober living homes and safe housing environments, are special facilities designed to provide structured living and safe housing conditions for individuals exiting drug rehab programs. A residential detoxification facility is typically used as the initial detoxification point of an individual’s recovery. During this stage the individual is under close monitoring and care by staff at the detoxification center. The goal of the addict is to get as much help as possible during the first few days, as well as support during the remainder of the addict’s stay in the program.
Residential drug detoxification centers may be in a private facility or may be an inpatient treatment facility like a residential rehab. Inpatient programs are typically used for longer stays. The primary purpose of an inpatient treatment center is to treat and rehabilitate the addict while allowing him to return to normal life and relationships. This is usually done through a combination of outpatient treatment, as well as group therapy sessions and/or counseling. A residential treatment center has a variety of programs and activities that may include residential detoxification, residential drug detoxification and detox programs. It is important to remember that a residential detoxification treatment is not a substitute for other types of treatment. If a person chooses to go on to attend a residential treatment center after leaving an outpatient treatment program, they must be prepared for long term stay, even if it is a short-term stay.
The main difference between residential drug rehab treatment programs and sober living homes is that in these facilities the addict is left alone, with minimal supervision. While in residential drug detoxification centers, the addict can’t leave to go home, and has limited access to friends and family. In an inpatient drug treatment center, the addict can see his or her family and friends when they want, and there are often group therapy sessions and group activities to help the recovering addict cope with their new situation. Inpatient residential drug rehab treatment programs may also provide support for the addict during the first few days of recovery, as well as some type of employment training or counseling. The addict will be placed in a group home environment, where they will have many of the same challenges they would have if they were out in the community. In an outpatient rehab center, the addict is free to come and go as they please.
