Sober living homes, also known as sober living apartments and sober living facilities, are residential facilities that offer supportive and safe housing for people leaving drug rehab programs. SLHs are often a transitional environment in between mainstream society and such programs. The reason behind this is to enable recovering addicts to live safely in their surroundings with their friends and families. It is also to help them cope with everyday routines and responsibilities within the community.
Many people are hesitant to enter the services of an SLH because of fear of relapse. This can be attributed to a number of factors, including fear and uncertainty about the program, fear of the environment and fear of the social consequences of leaving behind family and friends who may be close to them. One can alleviate their fears by consulting a professional SLH coordinator to assess the suitability of the individual for entering into the program. In addition, there are counselors available who can counsel clients about their fears and anxieties. One might even wish to attend an orientation session where the counselor and the staff can provide a brief introduction to the SLH environment, how it works, what types of things are required to participate in the service, and any other important information that the client may require to enable them to enroll in the program.
The key factors that qualify a person for entering the Sober Living program are their determination and commitment to sobriety. Most SLH coordinators ask all applicants to undergo an evaluation test, a drug screening and psychological screening. It is during these evaluations that the determination of whether or not the individual is able to maintain sobriety through the entire program is made. Once this is determined, they will determine if the program will be best suited to the individual’s needs and circumstances. There is also the option of taking a one-on-one counseling session to discuss issues of concern with the coordinator and the individual’s counselor in order to help prepare the individual for entering the program.
