In Balance Transitional Living

Sober Living Homes, also known as sober living facilities and sober living areas, are residential facilities which provide structured, secure living conditions and supportive, therapeutic housing for individuals exiting drug rehab programs. SLHs typically serve as an intermediate transitional environment between these programs and mainstream society, helping recovering addicts transition back into their communities after years of drug addiction and abuse. Because there are so many differences between drug rehab and so-called “normal” living, it is important to understand the many differences in how an SLH operates.

A sober living home offers several different types of services. These services include detoxification, inpatient treatment and outpatient treatment. For detoxification, the addict will be required to undergo a full medical detox, including a complete medical screening and a laboratory test, to determine if the individual is truly detoxifying from his/her addiction. Inpatient treatment programs are usually limited to those who are in complete and ongoing recovery, while outpatient treatment programs are generally available to anyone who wishes to use the facility’s services.

While many people are drawn to the idea of living in a residential facility, it may not be right for you if you have any history of violent behavior or abuse. If you suffer from mental illness, substance abuse or any other sort of psychiatric disorder that requires medical attention, it may not be a good idea to live in a residential facility. If you do not have any of these issues, it is usually possible to live at a sober living house in a less restrictive setting such as an apartment or in a hotel room. You may even find that you can live at home, if you choose, instead of going to the residential facility, if this is the best choice for you and your family.
