Sober living homes, also known as sober living centers and sober living communities, are residential facilities designed specifically to provide therapeutic, safe, and structured living conditions for individuals leaving drug rehab programs. SLHs usually serve as an intermediate between such facilities and normal society. The residential treatment center generally provides residents with structured daily activities, a recreational program, and individual or group counseling services. In many cases the facility also serves as a residential treatment facility for substance abusers who have failed to successfully overcome their addictions in the community.
The purpose of these types of facilities is to provide individuals with the tools they need to succeed in their recovery from alcohol and other drug abuse and addiction programs. By providing an appropriate and healthy residential environment, these facilities help an individual cope with the challenges and obstacles that accompany the process of quitting using drugs and alcohol. The residential treatment facility should have at least one full-time staff member assigned to each resident, as well as one or more on-site nurses and/or doctors. The residential treatment facility should also have a 24 hour onsite health and safety monitoring system in place, as well as a secure emergency medical service. These types of residential facilities also typically include onsite mental health services, social service programs, and educational support services, as well as support groups.
Because an individual may be receiving treatment in a residential treatment center for a period of up to a year, some facilities have extended residency programs available to their residents. Residents are also able to participate in continuing education activities, such as seminars and workshops. The cost of living in a residential treatment facility will vary by state and region. While some residents will find the cost of living within the facility very affordable, others may find that the costs of living outside the facility are prohibitively high. Before selecting a residential treatment facility, it is important to speak with the counselors at the facility, as well as speak with a reputable housing agency to determine the most cost effective long-term solution for your particular needs.
