Sober Living Homes, sometimes referred to as sober living communities and sober living apartments, are facilities that offer structured, safe living conditions and supportive, individualized living arrangements for people leaving drug addiction programs. SLHs often serve as an interim environment between these programs and the mainstream society, in which people can begin to regain control of their lives. Many people choose to stay at an SLH while they are receiving treatment at a local treatment center, in order to continue with the healing process. These residential living facilities provide the basic needs that a person requires to live in an environment conducive to the recovery process.
Most Sober Living Homes offers at least some of the following services: 24-hour security surveillance, detoxification services, group therapy, personal hygiene services, laundry facilities, a home office and recreation area, and support for those leaving their residential treatment programs in residential treatment centers. These types of residential treatment centers may not offer every amenity offered by an SLH. However, these homes do provide basic needs that can be difficult to access in a standard treatment facility. This allows someone to transition from an addict’s world into a safer, healthier environment. In order to receive the full benefits of residential living, an individual must make arrangements to receive care outside of the home when necessary. When in a residential treatment program, many addicts feel isolated and depressed, due to their dependence on drugs.
The primary function of a Sober Living Home is to provide safety and security for its residents while they are in need of it. Residential treatment centers are designed to provide drug addicts with a more stable environment in which to seek treatment. It is not uncommon for an addict to return to their drug addiction after completing a drug rehab program, because they have found an environment that suits their needs and enables them to maintain a lifestyle that is suitable to living with their addiction. Many people leave their drug addiction programs feeling very disillusioned and may even return to their addictive behavior after finishing the program, in order to escape the withdrawal symptoms of withdrawal. A residential drug rehab program offers people a safe place to receive proper care while they seek an alternative lifestyle.
