Sober Living Homes, also known as sober living homes and residential rehabilitation centers, are institutions that offer residential, safe living conditions and therapeutic, structured living conditions to individuals exiting drug addiction programs. They are typically made up of one or more residential treatment centers. Many SLHs provide assistance for the individual in return for their participation in drug treatment programs. Many SLHs also provide employment and vocational training. In most cases, an SLH serves as a transition between such programs and regular society.
Sober Living Homes programs offer a variety of services and amenities. Programs may include onsite mental health care, drug detox, alcohol detox, group therapy, residential treatment, support groups, group homes, self-help support groups, job placement and community service. Drug abuse has been found to be responsible for mental disorders including post-traumatic stress disorder, schizophrenia and depression. Therefore, many residential rehab programs have counselors on staff to help patients manage their feelings while undergoing treatment. In some cases, a patient may be prescribed medication to relieve symptoms of anxiety and depression. In some cases, patients may receive outpatient therapy or participate in group therapies. However, in some states, an individual with substance abuse problems is required to be treated at a SLH in order to receive treatment.
As there are several types of living homes, they are generally classified according to the types of patients who choose to live at a particular SLH. For instance, there are residential care homes and residential rehabilitation facilities. Residential care homes are typically used by those seeking short-term care. These living homes may be assisted living or inpatient, while residential rehabilitation centers are usually used by those seeking long-term care. While residential care homes usually offer more services and amenities than residential rehabilitation centers, both types are designed to provide safe and therapeutic living.
