The term “sober living homes” refers to a variety of residential care facilities where individuals leave drug rehab programs and enter into sober living. Sober living homes, or sober living communities, are private facilities that offer therapeutic, residential living conditions and safe shelter for people leaving drug rehab programs. SLHs typically serve as an interim transition between traditional treatment programs and traditional society. Some SLHs are privately owned and operated, while others are government-run agencies. SLHs have evolved significantly since the first sober living home opened in 1966. The following are some of the characteristics of a good SLH:

* Sober living homes are clean, organized, and well-appointed. They usually have fully equipped kitchens, living areas, and bedrooms. Residents typically report being more relaxed and free of stress and fatigue after moving into the facility. * There is a support system within the community. Residents work with each other to stay on task, gain social skills, and find solutions for problems related to drug addiction.

As an SLH, you will have your own unit in which to live. It may be a room in a house, apartment, or condo. When you move out of the facility, you will be given a discharge notice that states where you moved to. You may be required to turn in your belongings and move out by a specific date. * The center will have a staff to help you with your daily activities and chores. Most centers have a doctor on staff. * In order to get the most out of a sober living home, it is best to consider if the organization offers services such as support groups, aftercare, and counseling to help with drug withdrawal symptoms.
