Sober Living Homes, sometimes known as sober living facilities and sober living residential areas, are facilities which offer safe living and supportive, structured housing conditions to individuals exiting drug rehabilitation programs. People in the program typically undergo a withdrawal phase and may return home with a variety of problems. SLHs act as a transition between these programs and society, often providing individualized care that addresses the particular needs of each patient. In some cases, patients may be offered assistance in finding jobs or establishing work plans. These homes provide medical assistance and other services to residents as part of a drug treatment program and may also offer a number of other services and amenities that may help them to integrate into everyday life.
Sober living homes may also include a combination of community living and a residential treatment facility. Many of these centers are designed around one specific problem or set of issues, such as alcohol abuse or an eating disorder, for example. Other centers will offer a wide variety of services to accommodate the various needs of their residents, such as physical exercise, mental health therapy, and even counseling and relationship help. There are also facilities in many cities, which are designed to provide short term or long term care to the residents, as well as extended stays in a specialized facility.
Although the vast majority of sobered living homes are residential facilities, some are available to residents who are seeking outpatient care. Many of these centers are located close to a doctor’s office, and residents may have access to local hospitals and other local medical facilities. Many of these homes are not licensed mental health or alcohol treatment facilities, but offer a safe and supervised environment for the treatment of mental disorders or substance use disorders.
