Sober Living Homes, also known as sober living residences and sober living communities, are residential facilities that offer structured, safe living conditions and supportive, individualized living. Such homes may include assisted living and retirement communities. In order to qualify, an individual must have a desire to quit drugs and alcohol, to work in a drug-free environment and to be self-sufficient. Many SLHs have a common theme of group activities and recreational activities. Some SLHs are designed with single adults in mind. For instance, an individual in a group therapy session may stay in one of the community’s apartments. Single adults may live in individual apartments, private rooms or group homes.
In addition to housing residents, these homes also provide other services to residents. In some cases, the homes offer cooking and meal preparation programs for residents. Other communities offer laundry facilities, grocery stores and medical care. In some cases, SLHs offer a laundry service and an emergency room. Residents may also be able to obtain federal or state housing benefits or Medicaid.
The residents of these homes undergo comprehensive treatment with the intention of changing their life skills, developing new ones and improving their overall well-being. The goal is not only to get clean and stay clean but to be completely recovered from drug addiction. People who attend an SLH for rehabilitation usually leave the home feeling stronger, more confident, healthy and able to lead their lives. The community in which the residents live, work and socialize provides them with a sense of safety and security. In some cases, SLHs may even provide assistance with finding employment.
