Sober Living Homes, also known as sober living facilities and sober living communities, are establishments which provide support, safe housing, structured, supervised living situations for people leaving drug rehabilitation programs. SLHs can serve as a transition from these programs to mainstream society. In some cases they can be used as a final phase of a drug treatment program where all drug users are eventually discharged. Some SLH are operated by local community-based agencies or faith-based organizations. In other cases they are privately owned facilities which have either been self-funded by the owners themselves or by a private investor.
Generally, residential and long-term care facilities (LTCFs) offer both residential and long term care services to a wide variety of clients. The facilities offer activities and programs that are geared toward individual need, and many facilities also offer in-house programs designed to meet the needs of their own clients. Many’s are funded by local governments and offer services to the general public at significantly discounted rates. These programs range from in-home services to community-based services such as a free after-school program or a group of volunteers on a nightly basis. The services offered include: individual and group counseling; detoxification and rehab recovery services; group therapy and social service programs; respite programs; and group and individual recreational activities. Many facilities offer 24-hour supervision services.

Some choose to stay in the center for a period of time and then move on to a more supportive lifestyle. Others decide to stay in the center for a longer period of time and then move on to a more fulfilling lifestyle. The decision to stay in a Sober Living Home is completely up to the individual, and there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Before making the decision to move into a facility it is necessary to take some time to evaluate what options you have and what your options are.
