Sober Living Homes, also known as sober living facilities and sober living apartments, are facilities designed to provide therapeutic and structured living conditions for individuals who have recently been out of drug rehab programs. SLHs provide a safe and secure transitional environment from treatment to normal life. Some of the more common residential services include detoxification, individual counseling, medical care, and recreation. Most sobered homes offer group and family activities as well.

Many residential treatment programs offer detoxification as part of their program. This can be performed in an outpatient setting or inpatient setting. Detox centers are often private clinics and have experienced staff to administer detoxification procedures. Treatment for alcohol and substance abuse may include group counseling, self-help groups, individual sessions with licensed counselors, individual and family therapy, medication-assisted detoxification, and detoxification at a hospital or other outpatient facility.

Other residential treatment programs offer residential and long-term living facilities for individuals suffering from addiction. Some centers offer specialized treatment for people suffering from addiction, while others focus on residential and supportive living. Many residential treatment facilities are located in or close to major metropolitan areas where public transportation is readily available. These facilities often provide activities to keep residents busy during the day. Long-term care facilities offer care and treatment services for an extended period of time. They may also include a 24-hour emergency response system.
