Sober living homes, also known as sober living facilities and sober living communities, are residences, usually apartments, which provide therapeutic, safe, structured living situations for individuals leaving drug addiction programs. Some residential sober living homes are for long-term programs, while others are only short-term. SLHs (Substance-Assisted Housing Facilities) generally serve as a transition between such drug-treatment programs and the community. They are usually rented out by the treatment center on an in-house basis or by a housing agency.
The treatment center will pay for all expenses including the rent for the residential home, security deposits, maintenance and other related services, but the family has to cover all the other expenses and provide their own personal expenses. Sober living homes generally have some common areas such as common rooms, common dining areas, common hallways, common parking areas, and common hallways to designate specific areas in the home. Residents of these homes live under a strict set of rules and regulations. There is no alcohol, drugs or smoking allowed in the residences, but the presence of children can sometimes be permitted. Some of these centers even offer childcare services for residents of the home.
Residential living arrangements for drug users can vary from person to person depending on the condition of their addictions and the severity of their addictions. For instance, an individual who has only mild dependence on alcohol might want to move in with a family member. Others may want to stay in a group home where they will share rooms and other amenities like a common dining area. Still others might prefer to live in a unit away from other people where there will be fewer distractions. The choice of where to live and how to maintain it should be considered by each individual before joining a program. As with any type of commitment to change, staying sober and maintaining a clean life is not easy and it takes work and sacrifice from the addict and their family. However, if you are willing to make the effort and do what it takes to get clean, living in a sober residential home will be a life-changing experience.
