Sober living homes, also known as sober living homes and sober residential environments, are establishments that provide structured, safe living conditions and supportive, therapeutic living conditions for those exiting drug addiction programs. These homes are typically located in or near large cities. Although many people opt to live at a Sober Living Home for short periods of time, most have permanent residences.

A Sober Living Home can be described as any house that is dedicated to residential use. Typically, the housing is comprised of one room, usually with a bed, a couch, and other furniture. Often, there is one other person or persons living in the home. If the family members live in a home that has more than one occupant, it is considered a tri-home. The most typical Sober Living Home environment contains either a single or two-person residence. Many rehab programs will provide housing for their patients, but sometimes the resident has to find housing on their own.

A residential environment is much different from a residential treatment center. A Residential Living Facility is designed to provide a safe, secure, and stable environment for a long-term stay. This environment usually includes both private and group living. Residential treatment facilities, on the other hand, offer group counseling sessions to those who wish to engage in group therapy. Residential treatments can be customized to suit the individual needs of the patient. Most residential programs are residential in nature, although some outpatient programs exist. While a lot of the characteristics of a residential environment can be found in a treatment facility, the treatment methods may be totally different.
