Sober Living Homes, or sober living communities, are facilities which provide structured, therapeutic housing and safe, supportive, drug-free living conditions for individuals leaving alcohol treatment programs. Most so-called sober living communities have been established to help alcoholics overcome their dependence on alcohol and develop a sense of purpose and independence. There are many types of such living communities such as residential rehab centers, detoxification centers, and inpatient and outpatient recovery programs. In these living homes individuals live together as part of a group or in single-person units, depending on the severity of their addiction and the extent of the addiction treatment they require.

There are two types of drug treatment programs available for alcoholics. The first is a residential treatment. This type of program provides individualized care that usually includes detoxification, medication management, and relapse prevention therapies. The second is outpatient treatment. In this type of treatment, individuals are admitted temporarily in a residential or rehab center for treatment. Many of these living homes are owned by private companies who contract with local treatment and recovery programs. Some are government-run programs run by local agencies.

There are several different types of treatment and rehabilitation available for alcoholics. The most popular treatment in this field is outpatient treatment. These centers are generally outpatient in nature, since there are not enough beds for long-term patients. Residential treatment facilities are sometimes known as sober living homes. These are usually more permanent residential centers, since there are limited space and staff to treat long-term alcoholics. Detoxification centers and inpatient treatment centers, on the other hand, are used for detoxifying alcoholics from drugs, alcohol, and the combination of both. Treatment centers, including sober living homes, have different programs and treatment procedures; however, most of them provide the same level of services and care.
