Sober Living Homes, sometimes called sober residential homes and sober living areas, are facilities which offer secure housing and structured, supportive, safe living conditions for individuals leaving drug addiction programs. SLHs often serve as an important transitional environment from such programs to mainstream society. In many cases, people in recovery who return to their normal lives can face difficulty adjusting to the fact that they have no substance abuse problem to deal with. As such, the majority of these homes seek to provide housing to people in recovery, usually for a period of several years. These rules may include a ban on outside social gatherings for residents, a prohibition against smoking in the home, a restriction on alcohol consumption and a requirement that residents take part in group therapy sessions.
