Sober Living Homes, also known as sober living homes and structured recovery living environments, are special facilities that offer safe, structured living arrangements and support for those exiting drug treatment programs. SLHs are a transitional community between those entering these programs and more conventional society. The residential facility serves to provide the client with an environment that is comfortable and safe to move forward with their lives and is an important part of the drug treatment process.
While at a sobriety residential rehab center the individual is required to maintain their sobriety by participating in a number of activities, such as counseling, group therapy, group exercise classes, education courses, socialization groups, recreation centers, and the like. In many cases, people who enter drug treatment programs enter into a detoxification process that lasts up to a year. During this time, individuals are expected to take care of their needs and to maintain sobriety that lasts the entire duration of the program. Many times, after finishing a twelve to eighteen month program, an individual is ready to enter the community. This is often done through an SLH.
A number of residential rehab facilities offer SLH programs, and there are many different types of residential rehab facilities across the country. The most common type of residential rehab facility is a residential treatment center, which consists of a variety of residential units. Residential treatment centers typically combine both substance abuse and alcohol treatment. In some cases, the residential treatment center will also include services that focus on cognitive behavioral therapy. Some residential treatment centers also incorporate a short term counseling or group therapy as part of the residential treatment process. In recent years, some rehab centers are adding the option of medication-assisted treatment to the residential program.
