Sober Living Homes, sometimes referred to as sober housing and detoxification homes, are facilities which offer supportive, safe living conditions and safe residential living for those leaving drug rehab programs. SLHs generally serve as an interim transition between outpatient programs and normal society. They offer detoxification services which help the addicts to deal with withdrawal symptoms safely and to help them recover quickly and in a controlled manner. The residents of an SLH do not leave the facility to go home and they can return to their homes within two days to seven days depending on the extent of withdrawal symptoms. Some SLHs also offer intensive services to the residents. An SLH is usually run by an agency that is licensed by the state government or by a private organization.
In the United States, sober living homes have become a common sight in residential treatment centers. The addict is admitted into the detoxification program of the treatment center and then kept in a semi-detoxification state. Some of the treatment centers offer an SLH that lasts for a short period of time. The addict has to return to their homes to continue their daily activities after entering the SLH, but most of these so-called “sober living homes” have a long term plan for the addict’s recovery and keep them in regular contact with their families. The rehabilitation program in such a home helps the addict to avoid relapse and to take charge of his or her life in a healthy way.
There are several types of residential treatment programs available for the recovering addicts. These include inpatient, outpatient, inpatient/outpatient and residential treatment centers. If the addict is unable to continue the drug treatment at the treatment center, he/she may choose to go back home. A good way to find the best place for the addict to go is to visit the state department of health website and search the various treatment centers that are operating in the area in which they live.
