Sober Living Homes, also referred to as sober homes and sober living situations, are residential care facilities which offer supportive, safe, and structured living conditions for those exiting drug addiction programs. SLHs typically serve as an interim period between these programs and the mainstream society. Sober Living Homes are usually private residences or apartments that house residents who are recovering from drug addiction. There are many types of programs that a patient may choose to enter into. Some so-called “sober living homes” are actually halfway houses operated by drug treatment centers and addiction centers. These types of facilities often have facilities and amenities available for clients to use while they are in these facilities. While a patient is staying in an inpatient program at an addiction center, they may live in a residence or apartment that offers all the comforts of home while also providing them with access to the programs that the center provides.
There are several benefits that are associated with being housed in residential care facilities. First of all, there are generally fewer rules than if one lives on their own. Also, there are usually less stringent rules regarding the amount of drugs that a patient can have in their system. In many cases, individuals who live in the sober home are not even subjected to drug tests in order to prevent them from relapsing into drug addiction. Therefore, many times, individuals who are staying in an inpatient rehab program will have a clean record and are able to enter the community with minimal fear of relapse.
In addition to the benefits that are associated with a resident’s living in an inpatient rehab program, so-called sober living homes also allow a patient to be able to participate in activities with people who are of similar backgrounds. This allows a person to build relationships and form a network of support which is invaluable when a person is undergoing a detoxification process. Finally, residential homes often offer more amenities and services that a person is unable to get in a drug treatment center. One common amenity offered by these establishments is a wide array of recreational activities such as tennis and pool access. Many times a patient will enjoy activities that are not available in a rehab facility which will make this an ideal living situation.
