Sober Living Homes, also known as sober living facilities and sober living apartments, are apartments and other supportive living arrangements designed to provide safe, clean housing and structured, supervised living conditions for those leaving drug rehabilitation programs. SLHs typically serve as a transition between these programs and the mainstream society. A well-run SLH is capable of providing many of the comforts of home to its residents. It offers laundry facilities, a refrigerator, microwave ovens, and even a bar or kitchenette in some cases.
Most sobered living homes also feature a health club. In some cases, some have onsite doctors’ offices. Some offer private rooms or other amenities. There may be onsite daycare, counseling services, and other community services that the residents may need while they are at the facility. The staff of a residential treatment program usually serves as the medical and psychological aides to the residents. These staff members provide services such as medical checkups and screening, medical and mental health care, and referrals to local services for individuals and families. Residents at residential treatment centers are often treated with compassion and respect, and the goal is to get them off drugs and alcohol for good.
Some of the facilities and boarding houses that offer sobered living services are in the form of apartments, single family residences, and assisted living communities. The main purpose of the individual living quarters is to provide a safe, clean, controlled environment where individuals can live and interact with one another. Many of these residences are small and feature only two or three rooms. Many provide laundry facilities and a refrigerator. Most also provide some sort of social interaction among residents such as sports, cooking, and even art classes. Many of these homes offer a variety of activities and entertainment for residents to choose from. They also offer exercise equipment for use by residents in order to help improve their physical activity and health.
