Sober Living Homes, or more accurately sober living homes, are establishments that provide supportive, secure living arrangements and safe housing to individuals exiting drug rehabilitation programs. These establishments often provide care for their residents in the form of daycare, counseling, respite care, and other related services. SLHs often serve as an interim transition between outpatient drug treatment programs and mainstream society after a person has been through the drug rehab. There are a number of different facilities, though, that specialize in residential drug treatment, and so it is important to evaluate which of these facilities will be best for the individual you wish to become a resident.
There are some basic requirements for entering into a program in a Sober Living Home. These include: prior to enrollment, the individual must have had at least one year of on-going detoxification from drugs and alcohol, and a clean record in any major social gathering areas, such as schools, work or church. The patient must also undergo a complete physical and mental evaluation by an authorized physician or mental health professional. The evaluation will help determine the individual’s suitability for drug rehab and if they are a good candidate. The patient’s preference and willingness to enter a specific rehab may be a factor in the selection process.
Because Sober Living Homes is designed with addicts in mind, many of the staff members are experts in the rehabilitation and management of the program. The staff members are required to undergo drug and alcohol abuse and addiction screenings as well as psychiatric evaluations. Many times, the staff will provide a recommendation for an individual in need of a residential rehab in the form of a referral. If a Sober Living Home can be determined to be the right choice for the individual, the addict will begin the process of getting into recovery and staying clean once again. This could take anywhere from a few months to several years depending on the level of treatment that is used in the program. For those who have already entered a rehab center, their stay will most likely be extended in order to keep them healthy during this time.
